If you’re angry, afraid, sad, or find yourself battling bad habits and unhealthy desires, here are five philosophical strategies to help you find peace:
Cognitive Distancing: Remember, “It is not things that disturb people, but their judgements about those things.”
Temporal Perspective: Remind yourself that nothing lasts forever and everything is in flux. Whatever troubles you is transient. Will you still be upset about this in 10 years? If not, why are you upset about it now?
Resource Inventory: What virtues and abilities do you have to help you cope or overcome this?
Control Perspective: Are you upset about something you have no control over? Refocus on what you control and forget the rest.
Objective Reframe: Write down what’s bothering you in language stripped of judgment and emotion. Simply lay out what’s happening factually. Is that so bad?
