Donald Robertson is a talented therapist, philosopher, and scholar focused on how philosophy and therapy can help people and an interest in therapeutic research. He's the author of How To Think Like A Roman Emperor and other great books on Stoicism, history, and philosophy. Plus, he's got a great Scottish brogue.
We're obsessed with the now, but the past has so much to teach us. The past is full of people who aren't US. They're biased and flawed, of course, but in unique ways leading them to think differently than us. Reading old books, hilariously, often feels like a breath of fresh air. Classical Futurist is full of modern thought about ancient ideas and authors, and well worth your time. I've written an essay about the return of Cynicism for the site.
Bevan is a modern day Montaigne. His essays are discursive but moving and rise to the original French meaning of essay — to a try or attempt. Bevan starts with an idea and doggedly follows it wherever it leads. He's attempting to figure out what he thinks. Enjoyably, we follow along to his sometimes-surprising conclusions.
