It’s actually a bit difficult to sort through who is an influencer and who is an authority. There are a few I’m confident about on both sides, but many in the middle. I guess that’s why checking primary sources is important!
This is ever the dilemma in all fields, and I think ultimately the only escape is a healthy attitude of skepticism, gradually increases your own expertise in the subject, and a willingness to bring your own mind to bear on the claims and scrutinize the ideas themselves not as "is this cannon," but "does this square with reason."
